THEME: Forests and Me
The survival of Hawaiʻi’s forests is critical for our own survival. We rely on each other. Trees attract and capture fresh water for us to drink, they cool us on hot days, and they produce food for people and other animals to eat and materials for us to create our homes. Trees are home to more than 10,000 unique plants and animals found nowhere else in the world. Here in Hawai‘i, we have many kinds of forests: wet forests and dryland forests, forests with mostly native trees, forests with introduced trees, and food forests with a mix of food and other trees. We also have urban forests, with trees growing all around where we live, learn, play, and work. We rely on them, and they rely on us! We encourage you to create a piece of art that shows your relationship to Hawaiʻi’s forests, what forests mean to you, and why they are worth protecting and stewarding.
